Middle Shuswap Water Stewards

This page links to sample testing results and other items about the watershed from Sugar Lake to Mabel Lake, not including the lakes themselves.

Shuswap River -- Oddfellows Campground

The Middle Shuswap Water Stewards is a combination of 2 groups of volunteers, the Cherryville Water Stewards (CWS) and the Middle Shuswap & Lumby Water Stewards (MSL). The Middle Shuswap watershed stretches from Sugar Lake to Mabel Lake. Cherryville Stewards are augmented by Claude Labine, who pays for his results. Together they concentrate on three creeks and some spots along the Shuswap River. The MSL group takes samples in the Bessette watershed, and also a couple of spots along the Shuswap.

Cherryville Water StewardsAlthough Cherryville results are on this site you're visiting, The Cherryville Water Stewards have a (nice!) web site at https://www.crmc-cherryville.ca/thecherryvillewaterstewards,

Analysis of the samples gathered by these volunteers is funded by the Regional District of North Okanagan.

Indexes to the test results as submitted to and reported by CARO (Kelowna), along with the Hach meter readings where available, are listed below.

Cherry Creek, Bessette Creek and Upper Middle Shuswap River Watersheds see page bottom

The number of constituents (analytes) in each test is vast, particularly for samples tested for metals. So some analytes have been selected as important or interesting, particularly if they have tended to exceed published limits with regard to the requirements of aquatic life or human recreation. They have been displayed in three watershed groupings from upstream to downstream.

CARO Reports - Upper Middle Shuswap (Cherryville)

Below is a list of posts with attachments as received from CARO Analytics Services. The attachments show the analyses for each of our sampling days throughout the years since 2008. On some days, analyses were augmented to include metals.

Every sampling day we also used a Hach meter (thanks to Claude Labine) to measure the water's oxygen content at each location, by immersing the Hach probe in the stream and reading the milligrams per litre (mg/L) displayed by the meter. The readings are (in the process of being included) in the posts, along with the water temperature, the air entrainment percentage, and the atmospheric pressure, from which the meter calculates the Dissolved Oxygen (DO).

Test results from the Upper Middle Shuswap River, Cherry Creek and often including Reiter & Ferry Creeks:

At the Harris Creek site the large bottle was lost downstream. We used the bottle from the Duteau set, and the next day (Monday) removed a bottle from the set slated for use in August, filled it at the Duteau site and sent it to CARO. Hence 2 reports. A third report appears to be an (unsuccessful)attempt by CARO to provide a concatenation.

Cherry Creek Watershed (N. & S. Forks)

Cherry Creek, beginning as two creeks known as the North and South forks, is the largest tributary of the Middle Shuswap River. It is not a Pacific salmon spawning creek but may have been prior to the construction of Wilsey Dam at Shuswap Falls in 1929.

Sampling Sites 2008+ (upstream to downstream)

  • North Fork (N. Fork Rd bridge)
  • South Fork (S. Fork Rd bridge) -  replaced by 1/2 Mile Cr. in and since Aug. 2018
  • North Fork (at junction) - 2010 to 2015 only
  • South Fork (at junction) - 2010 to 2015 only

(*)Primary Contact Maximum :-

B.C. provincial standard for recreation with most of the body in the water and risk of ingestion (e.g. swimming).
The Canadian standard is much higher, being a count of 200/100mL.
Both references speak of the geometric mean of several samples, as opposed to single-sample maximum. The standards quoted here are for the geometric mean, a lower maximum than allowed by a single sample result.

(*) Primary Contact Maximum :-

B.C. provincial standard for recreation with most of the body in the water and risk of ingestion (e.g. swimming)
It now refers to the Canadian standard, but used to be lower. It's now 200/100mL.

Both references speak of the geometric mean of several samples, as opposed to single-sample maximum. The standards quoted here are for the geometric mean, a lower maximum than allowed by a single sample result.

Middle Shuswap Watershed (including Reiter, Cherry, Ferry, Bessette Creeks)

The Middle Shuswap River begins at Brenda Falls on Sugar Lake and empties into Mabel Lake, It has serveral tributaries, among them Reiter, Cherry, Ferry and Bessette Creeks. Only Bessette Creek contains spawning pacific salmon, because of the Hydro Dam at Shuswap Falls.

Sampling Sites 2013+ (upstream to downstream)

  • Reiter Creek
  • Sihils Rd bridge
  • Cherry Creek at Sugar Lake Rd
  • Ferry Creek at Sugar Lake Rd
  • BC Hydro Picnic site
  • below Wilsey Hydro Dam (Shuswap Falls)
  • Bessette Creek
  • Oddfellows camp site

The project of transferring results to match this watershed is unfinished. Displays will appear as they are completed.
